Sherman Oaks resident Adelita Lopez was watching TV at home Wednesday night when her 2022 Kia Soul burst into flames, completely destroying her car, her neighbor’s car and her entire carport. He said it was destroyed.
“I ran outside and my car caught fire,” Lopez told KTLA’s Angeli Kakade.
Lopez’s car was parked behind her apartment building on Fulton Avenue in Sherman Oaks, and neighbors said it was set on fire nearby in a suspected arson attack.
“The captain said, ‘We’re going to call it arson,'” Lopez said.
Wednesday’s fire was the latest in a series of fires in the neighborhood, including three vehicles and a building within a one-mile radius of Fulton Avenue and Moorpark Street, where Lopez suspects that his case is related.
“It’s very scary. It’s very traumatic,” Lopez said. “It’s been a really tough few days.”
Flames reaching 15 feet high were visible from the street Wednesday, and Lopez said she felt heat so strong that her bedroom window shattered and her second-floor air conditioning unit melted.
“There was a house fire in this neighborhood and several trash fires and Mark’s Garden on Ventura Boulevard were all set on fire the same night,” one neighbor said.
Lopez said she hopes the fire, which nearly destroyed power lines next to several homes, gets more attention from police and city officials.
“If there’s a serial arsonist in this neighborhood, we need to know,” Lopez said. “We need to arrest someone and get them off the streets.”
Lopez said she doesn’t have any footage to show police, so she’s asking for the public’s help and asking anyone who heard or saw anything to come forward.
