California skies are likely to be budget-friendly. Avelo Airlines, an ultra-low-cost carrier with Hollywood Burbank Airport as its West Coast home, has announced its packaging and pulling.
On Monday, Avelo confirmed that by December 2, 2025, all operations would be suspended and the four-year run would be terminated. Telled as a post-pandemic vandal, Abelo’s California debut was bold and launched in 2021 amidst the uncertainty of the Covid era on a route to an airport that has not been cut back on in 2021.

At its peak, Burbank was Abelo’s crown jewel, making up nearly a third of the airline’s passengers. In 2023, we drove 1 million guests from Bur. However, as competition grew and operational costs rose, the airline’s West Coast strategy was no longer meaningful.
“We believe in the continuation of our service. [Hollywood Burbank Airport] In the current operating environment, we don’t bring about proper financial returns against a very competitive background,” Levy told KTLA, saying Abelo will instead focus on “more efficient long-term growth.”
The drawdown begins immediately. Burbank will travel from the minifleet to a solo aircraft by mid-August, then disappearing from Abelo’s map this winter. The airline’s California-based employees are offered the opportunity to relocate to one of Abelo’s eight bases, including Hartford, Charlotte and Wilmington (Delaware, not Delaware, North Carolina).
Passengers with future reservations can cancel online for a refund.
While some observers have linked West Coast retreats to recent backlash over Abelo’s controversial ice summary charter program (operated in Arizona rather than California), the airlines claim the decision is purely economical.
Still, the news will stab for budget-conscious travelers who have praised Abelo for regaining some of the simplicity and affordable prices of California’s short-distance flights.
What about Burbank? With only a few airlines on the departure committee, there’s more reason to slow down, blow the wind through security, and remind you of the old $39 fare.
