Buldge Airline Avelo has announced it will suspend services at Hollywood Burbank Airport as part of a larger move to close the West Coast Fleet.
Services from Burbank will be suspended by early December as the company focuses on operations on the East Coast. By August 12, the airline announced that the company would cut its local fleet to one aircraft before fully shuttering.
“This was not an easy decision,” CEO Andrew Levy said in a statement. “We believe that continuing services from BUR in our current operating environment will not provide adequate financial benefits against a very competitive background.”
Avelo launched its first flight from Burbank in 2021, expanding its service to 13 routes.
The announcement follows protests and calls for boycotting the airline after it signs a contract with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and will transport migrants to detention centers both domestically and internationally.
A company spokesman told NBC4 that the decision to shut down operations on the West Coast had nothing to do with the protests.
The California crew will be given the option to transfer to another Abelo base, the airline said. These bases are located in Charlotte, North Carolina. Hartford, Connecticut and Wilmington, Delaware.
Customers who have already booked their flights can cancel and get a refund.
