A former Democrat from Spanberger in Abigail, Virginia, is accused by GOP opponents of the Virginia governor’s race to fail to include his role as a councillor in his financial disclosure report while she was a member of the Congress.
The campaign of Lt. Col. Winsam Earl Sears, which aims to replace incumbent GOP Governor Glenn Youngkin, calls incomplete disclosures “calculated lies” rather than “accidents.” However, according to Spanberger’s campaign, the only assets contained in the trust are Spanberger’s private residence and do not need to be disclosed.
In 2017, local real estate records show that Spanberger and her husband updated their will and as part of the process they transferred ownership of their home to trust that listed the pair’s children as beneficiaries. They bought it for about $500,000, and now it’s worth nearly $1 million.

After opening the trust, Spanberger did not include it in her annual financial disclosure report, which is mandated by Congress while serving in the House of Representatives.
“Abigail did not disclose the family’s only home, as private homes that do not earn income are not required to be disclosed. “Abigail submitted her disclosure in accordance with the home’s ethical rules. She does not require her to disclose her role as a trustee of a living trust that holds only her family’s home.”
However, the Earle-Sears campaign states that there is a lack of explanation for Spanberger’s desire to keep his family safe.

“Abigail Spanberger not only hides trust, but also holds nearly $1 million in assets,” Earl Sears campaign executive director Payton Vogel said in a statement to Fox News Digital. “It’s not an accident – it’s a calculated lie. The disclosure form doesn’t require anyone to put their family at risk. It’s just honest. If she lies about this serious thing, Virginians can’t trust her.”

Additionally, the Earle-Sears campaign points to requirements in the House Ethics Manual of Congress that members of the Congress must “disclose non-governmental positions” “whether or not they are compensated or not, including the position of “trusted”;

Spanberger joined the legislature representing northern Virginia districts in 2018 and was re-elected in the two subsequent election cycles, 2020 and 2022. Spanberger did not seek re-election in 2024, but is running to replace Youngkin after appointing Termkin later this year.

Earl Sears was elected lieutenant governor in 2021 and solidified herself into history books as the first woman of colour to be elected to Virginia’s statewide office.
Local media reports show that both candidates are being tapped to become candidates by their respective parties in the upcoming November general election. Cook Political Report is currently throwing and labeling races.
