AC Hotel Pasadena OSA offers stunning mountain views

Pasadena’s rather sleepy town has acquired another stylish rooftop in the form of an OSA rooftop, a brand new eatery on the top of the newly opened AC Hotel Pasadena. The predominantly outdoor restaurant, which opened last Friday, is located in the Playhouse Village district. When you come on New Year’s Day, the vantage point on the 6th floor gives you a fantastic view of Pasadena’s world-famous Rose Parade. The hotel restaurant sits along an important part of the route.

However, for the other 364 days, guests will be looking forward to the beautifully designed outdoor terrace with views of San Gabriel Mountain and a string lighting, fire pits and other landscaping elements inspired by the nearby Angeles National Forest. The interior design features a desert inspired colour scheme inspired by the work of Baja California and the world-renowned Mexican architect Lewis Barragan.

I was usually able to visit OSA directly on the roof of a hotel, although usually bears (“OSA” translated to female bear in Spanish) in general on weekends. Honestly, I can honestly say that the new opening is a big win for Pasadena. After all, California restaurants come from Boulevard Hospitality Group, a veteran of restaurants and bars between corks and batters in Inglewood.

The head chef of Carlos Court, formerly scratch and Encino sushi, is Hollywood’s rokusho, offering a globally influenced ingredient-first approach to standard, crowd-shaking hotel cuisine. Think of hand-made toston (fried plantain) with guacamole and black bean dip. King Ora Salmon Kurd with avocados, onions and dried seaweed. And a simple Wagyu beef smash burger. The food menu is currently quite limited, but Couts plans to expand additional items in the coming months, including grilled swordfish, homemade pasta and mezze options.

The seasonal cocktail program was developed by Pete St. Peter, bartender of Capri Club, one of Los Angeles’ best bars. Here, St. Peter branches out from her hard, apachiff, amaro work with a popular Eagle Rock watering hole with a refreshing signature drink menu, including spritz, margaritas and other agave spirit options. I especially liked the quick relief depicting chamomile-infused vodka with rosemary combining the bitterness of Saint-Germain, lime, celery and sparkling water. Expect a happy hour menu and extensive wine list, as well as the hotel bar standard.

It is true that Pasadena doesn’t get in the way of rooftop bars (the only other option in town is Granville, two stories), but OSA should be a draw for both locals and tourists due to its breathtaking sunset vista and impeccable interior design. Currently, the restaurant is open only for dinner services, but Boulevard Hospitality is set to debut its weekend brunch service later this summer.
