For over a century, some of the wealthiest people in the United States and the world have called California home. From past newspaper tycoons to current technology founders, Golden State has been a land of opportunity and luxury.
Forbes was able to re-edit the list of America’s wealthiest people and find the wealthiest people in all 50 states. In all states except three (Alaska, Delaware and West Virginia), their title belongs to billionaires. In five states, new residents have overtaken the crown of the wealthiest citizens from last year’s title winner.
These 50 wealthy Americans totaled to be worth the record $2 trillion combined, according to Forbes.
Naturally, the richest of them is Elon Musk. Tesla and SpaceX CEOs have been spending their time in Washington, DC recently, but it’s Texas who claims Musk and his estimated net worth of $388 billion. This comes from the estimated $195 billion net worth Forbe reported on last year’s list.
In California, the distinction between the wealthiest residents comes to Facebook founder and Palo Alto resident Mark Zuckerberg. Mark Zuckerberg’s net worth in 2025 is estimated to be $189 billion, approximately $12 billion more than 2024.
“Mark Zuckerberg is claiming California’s top position not because of the move, but because of the surge in his fortune. Meta’s stock has almost tripled over the past year after a massive layoff at the company and continued investment in AI and Metaverse,” Forbes said in the report.

According to Forbes’ analysis, the following interactive table shows the wealthiest people in each state as of April 2025.
! function() {“strict”; window.addeventlistener(“message”,(function(a){if(void 0!== a.data[“datawrapper-height”]){var e = document.queryselectorall(“iframe”); for(var t in a.data[“datawrapper-height”])(var r, i = 0; r = e[i];i ++) if(r.contentwindow === a.source) {var d = a.data[“datawrapper-height”][t]+”px”; r.style.height = d}}})}();
Those who lost their place on the list this year include Bill Gates, whose net worth has fallen after Forbes adjusted for an estimate of how much his ex-wife, Melinda French Gates, received in the divorce settlement.
In Arkansas, Rob Walton and his family made his brother Jim, the heir to Walmart, stand as the wealthiest in the state.
The fame of Wisconsin’s John Menard Jr. and Home Information Chain Menard lost spots to Diane Hendricks, one of the women on Forbes’ latest list. Among the women on the list, Jacqueline Mars of Virginia is the heir to Mars Candy Company, with the highest net worth of $39 billion. Nearby, Massachusetts CEO Abigail Johnson has raised a net worth of $31.5 billion.

The title of wealthiest resident is the easiest to achieve in Alaska. Leonard Hyde and Jonathan Rubini of JL Properties remain united as the wealthiest residents. Both have an estimate of $400 million.
