ACLU sues Trump administration for targeting international students

(Hill) – The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is suing President Trump’s administration in federal court for targeting international students whose legal status has been revoked.

“The outcome of the defendant’s unilateral and illegal termination is terrible. Dismissals drive students out of legal student status. Plaintiffs and classes face immigration detention and deportation. Plaintiffs and classes face harsh financial and academic difficulties. Class lawsuits filed in New Hampshire.

“In fact, the unilateral and illegal termination of defendants was mid-study (and mid-semester), and it was often quite costly and severely disrupted educational opportunities for students who were trying to spend a considerable amount of money while following all the rules required in the United States.”

Foreign students studying at universities and universities in the US either have completed their legal status or have their F-1 student visa revoked. Approximately 1,100 students from more than 170 schools have been affected since the latter half of last month as part of Trump’s immigration crackdown, the Associated Press found.

International students have rebutted, filing lawsuits in states such as Wisconsin, Montana and New Hampshire, and have now secured temporary restraining orders banning deportation from the country.

“The American Civil Liberties Union appears to be far more concerned with protecting foreign students than American civil liberties and security. They should consider changing their names. It is a privilege to grant a visa to reside in the United States,” said Tricia McLaughlin, deputy director of the Department of Homeland Security, in a statement to the Hill. “When you break our laws and defend violence and terrorism, that privilege should be revoked and you should not be in this country.”

McLaughlin added that “DHS will defend the State Department due to case-specific inquiries relating to the status of visa revocation or individual revocation.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters last month that more than 300 student visas had been completed and numbers had climbed daily.

International students attended on-campus demonstrations to protest Israeli war in Gaza and sought visas. However, some foreign students with criminal history were also targeted.

“We don’t go into statistics or numbers. We don’t go into the rationale for what happens with individual visas. What we can say is that the department cancels visas every day to ensure borders and keep our communities safe.
