Activities swirl around Edison as investigators approach Eton Fire’s cause.

Crews from Edison in Southern California are expanding their tall electric towers, testing nearby soils and taking close-up images of electrical equipment.

It could take several more months to finally determine the cause of the fire. However, Edison is under scrutiny as residents burned near the power line saw the fire on January 7th, watching the video-recorded flames and watching the video-recorded flames.

The gusts of activities at the fire scene come amid the growing number of lawsuits filed against Edison by residents and some public agencies. Edison says he is helping out the state’s investigation.

Cause Zeroing

The focus of the dozens of lawsuits filed against investigators, Edison of Southern California, and the utility company, was on three transmission towers overlooking Eton Canyon, where residents caught video of them burning their first flames.

In particular, one of the three towers, which have been idle for over 50 years, managed to reinforce the day the fire began, was the center of attention.

One lawsuit filed by the plaintiff’s lawyers concentrated on Edison Tower M16T1. Although no electricity has been directed through the tower’s wires for over 50 years, the plaintiffs say that the Tower M16T1 was regenerated in some form on January 7th, presumably causing a fire. According to the lawsuit, blackened marks and signs of damage to the steel structure suggest that arcing has occurred and sends electricity to equipment that appears to be unused.

Crews from Edison in Southern California are working with the LA County Fire Department to inspect the towers and other electrical equipment.

“This is part of our commitment to a thorough and transparent investigation,” said Kathleen Dunleavy, spokesman for Edison. “We are working to analyze potential and related data points with the support of third-party experts.”

More data, more questions

The lawyer who filed the lawsuit against Edison said he also received data from the company that could shed light on the three towers in Eton Canyon after the fire began on Jan. 7.

This includes thousands of videos and images of electrical equipment.

However, officials said they determined that the tests, testing and lab analysis could still take weeks and that the analysis could still take some time for the fire to begin.

Edison, who works with several law firms that filed the lawsuit, is conducting testing as part of the court’s protocol.

“The wildfire lawsuit is both a sprint and a marathon,” said Eliwade Scott, a partner at Edelson PC, one of the companies representing the hundreds of residents who filed the lawsuit, in an email. “The court’s decision allowed us to get high quality data right away.”

Dozens of cases have been filed on behalf of hundreds of residents. Los Angeles County, Pasadena and Sierra Madre have filed lawsuits against the utility giant in a closely monitored lawsuit that implies billions of dollars in damages and liability.

Inspection gust

Testing will begin on March 17th and is expected to last several weeks.

The Edison crew traveled to the site via helicopter last week and climbed the transmission tower to inspect various parts of the equipment. The law firm also uses camera-equipped drones to make them look better.

Experts completed a soil resistivity test last week to see how the soil around the tower absorbs and reacts to current flow.

This week, an Edison spokesperson said crews will be conducting current injection tests on lines where small amounts of current run on the transmission line to test the circuit.

Unanswered Questions

The California Department of Forestry and Los Angeles County Fire Department are leading an investigation into the cause of the fire, and have not said when to issue their findings. Such a survey can usually take more than a year.

If it turns out that the Tower M16T1 was involved in the fire, it is not entirely clear how it would regenerate, or whether Edison could have done more to prevent it.

The company has revealed abnormalities in the equipment.

Edison said in February that the line around Eton Canyon saw an instantaneous increase in current around the same time as when the fire began. In a filing with California regulators on Jan. 27, Edison said the outage occurred at Eagle Rock Gouldline. The line connects to the Gould substation in Edison, about five miles from the area where the fire began. The failure caused an increase in current across the company’s power lines.
