Worshipers are thanking Southern California this Easter Sunday, with many locals focusing on healing in the wake of a catastrophic January wildfire.
The annual Easter Sunrise Service, held at Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks Griffin Memorial Park in Westlake Village, concluded around 7am. After the Palisade fire destroyed the home and killed 12 people, they were devoted time to support the Palisade community in the Pacific.
When the Westlake Village event ended, others were gathering in Altadena for the Easter Sunrise Service, Pasadena International Place of Worship, which was blessed in the wake of the Eton Fire.
One staff member at Pihop, Haley Alaji, lost everything in the fire, but has yet to find a new home. She once walked the streets from the funeral and cemetery in Mountain View. There was Pihop’s first Easter Sunrise Service in 50 years – Accepting All Denominations – being held.

“We are here by faith… The Holy Spirit told us to do this,” she said. “To me… being here is very surreal. I feel like I don’t really feel the real effect of what we’re doing here, but with faith we know that we’re doing something.”
Talk about why the celebration took place at the cemetery, another staff member, Cheryl Allen, said the place represents both a sacred day and a community experience.
“This community has experienced so many tragedy…and we [want to celebrate] Easter message,” she told KTLA 5’s Jennifer McGraw.
Just in time for Easter, Palisade Drueter Church became the first church in the Pacific Palisard to re-serve after the fire this week.
