US Border Patrol agents arrested four men on Tuesday on suspicion of obstructing immigration enforcement activities in Van Nuisse and placing homemade tire spikes that had holes in the Border Patrol tires, federal authorities said.
A spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security said the four men were all US citizens, one of them accused of assaulting Border Patrol agents during their arrest.
Chief Gregory K. Bovino of the Border Patrol Sector identified the man as Genaro Ernesto Ayala, 43. Jude Jasmine Jannin Allard, 28; Sadot Jarnica, 54; Daniel Montenegro 30, in a statement on X. The case has been referred to the US Lawyer’s Office for filing, he said.
The popular nonprofit Instituto de Educacion del Sal de California has identified Ayala and Allard as defenders of Day Railer.
The group said the two men were arrested in the parking lot at Home Depot in Vannuys around 10am on Tuesday, exercising their legal right to comply and document the migrant attacks. IDEPSCA operates a one-day labor centre from the parking lot building. The group said it was targeted multiple times last week.
Ayala works as an outreach coordinator for the Van Nuys Day Labor Center, helping to connect migrant workers with resources and employment.
“I have never seen any evidence of the federal government accusing them of doing staff, but there is evidence of hidden federal agents working on not only staff but other volunteers that record,” she said. The immigration rights group Unión Del Barrio posted an Instagram video of people working on federal agents during their surgery.
A DHS spokesperson said federal officials have recently faced more attacks and attacks while enforcing immigration laws.
“Committee Noem was clear. If you interfere or assault our law enforcement, you will be charged to the fullest extent of the law,” the spokesman said.
The coalition of IDEPSCA and Community Advocates held a press conference outside the Metropolitan Detention Center in downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday evening, demanding the release of Ayala, Allard and all workers.
“Ernesto was arrested in our eyes during the course of an unconstitutional assault aimed at attacking the community and picking up people based on their skin colour and where they were looking for work.”
“It’s not a crime to be looking for jobs to support your family. It’s not a crime to be brown, Latino and looking for jobs,” he continued. “It’s not a crime to observe and record law enforcement when we’re instituting these types of raids.”
Soto said he tried to enter the facility to provide legal representatives to Ayala and Allard, but they were told they were still being processed and he was not allowed to meet them.
In addition to requesting the release of those arrested Monday, representatives from IDEPSCA and Unión Del Barrio said they are calling for an end to a “federal blackmailing tactic” targeting community worker centers and parking lots at Home Depot.
“We will continue to fight for Ernesto, Jude and all the workers who are being invited and terrified in these lots, these communities and these streets, our city,” said a representative for Union del Barrio. “People who work on people in the parking lot at Home Depot are not going to silence the day’s worker organization.”
