The Delta flight made an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport Friday afternoon after one of the engines started a fire, officials say.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the plane happened around 2:10pm while the plane (Delta Line Flight 446) was climbing during takeoff. The aircraft was on its way to Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport at the time.
Aviation news and blog site Aviation A2Z reported that the pilot detected signs of an engine fire shortly after departing from the LAX. Footage from the LA flight captured the moment when flames were visible on the left engine of the Boeing 767-400 while the aircraft was still tilted.
The crew reportedly declared a state of emergency and requested an immediate return to LAX, supplemented with the help of air traffic control to alert airport emergency services.
“Data from Flightradar24 shows that after the DL446 first climbs the Pacific Ocean, it will turn along the Downey and Paramount areas, taking the time for crew to complete the checklist and prepare for a safe landing,” reported Aviation A2Z. “The aircraft maintained a controlled altitude and speed while piloting.”
Flight 446 returned to lax safely, with no injuries reported. The FAA said it would investigate the incident.
