After the People Mover plan collapses, Inglewood pivots into a dedicated bus lane for transport connections

The city of Inglewood is bypassing plans to increase connectivity between the local transport hub and the city’s burgeoning sports and entertainment districts.

On Tuesday, city officials announced they would rethink the Englewood Transit Connector from a high, fully automated people mover concept to a small-scale improvement project highlighted by dedicated bus lanes.

“In the coming years, residents and visitors can expect new mobility hubs, bus-only lanes, new bicycle infrastructure, improved traffic flows and gait upgrades to serve events,” reads the city’s dedicated project’s website.

Lametro continues to make life difficult for fare Everders

The Inglewood Transit Connector Project, in the form of People Mover, aims to connect the K-Line downtown Inglewood Metro Station with the bustling, rapidly developing areas that Sofi Stadium, YouTube Theater, Intuit Dome and Kia Forum can find.

However, challenges from local officials, potentially evacuated business owners, owners of the Los Angeles Rams and Clippers, and U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, stopped the project from getting off the ground, leading to its ultimate cancellation.

Now, city officials say there are new plans with low prices and fewer businesses affected.

“As we see the world preparing to host the 2028 Olympics, we are looking inwards. We are taking strategic steps to make sure we make reservations in our community and achieve what is most important to those who live and work here.”

Butts said it has become clear that Inglewood residents and business owners want a walkable area with links to traffic relief that will revitalize the downtown area.

But now we are focusing on “incremental” approaches to improving city connectivity.

Phase 1 of the Revamped Project focuses on improvements along Downtown Market Street, linking to storefront upgrades, Metro K- and C-lines, shuttle services, bus-only lanes and “enhanced smart traffic technology.”

Authorities say the fading strategy will help provide traffic mitigation and neighborhood improvements ahead of the 2028 Olympics, minimizing construction disruptions near Prairie Avenue.

This dated rendering from the city of Inglewood shows the rendering of the metro station included as part of the People Mover Project.

These improvements are intended with the Olympics in mind, but the city has not completely ruled out the original plan. City leaders said the first stage will lay the foundation for expansion in the future, including large capacity automated people movers.

This new step-by-step plan reduces the number of potential businesses affected from 44 to 23, allowing evacuated people to receive relocation assistance and other grants for their troubles.

Inglewood City Councilman Alex Padilla said the goal of the revised plan not only “minimise disruption,” but also provides resources and tools to help businesses “behind their roots here in Inglewood.”

A contract with Elevate Inglewood Partners is permitted to initiate design activities. General involvement in the project, including design elements, pedestrian safety and mobility hubs, will continue throughout 2025, officials said.

The original plan for the Inglewood Transit Connector was awarded more than $1 billion in federal funds by the Biden administration. It is unclear whether these funds will still be awarded to Inglewood in the revised blueprint of the project, or whether the Trump administration will cancel grants previously allocated for some transport projects across the country.
