As Los Angeles officials see a surge in robberies and thefts in Altadena after the Eton Fire, enhanced security camera systems have been deployed in damaged fires to further block criminal activity, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.
Law enforcement said 250% of the arrests have been made in the neighborhood since the catastrophic wildfires, and 15 arrests have concluded one robbery operation.
According to the Sheriff’s department, the newly deployed device is a herd safety camera. According to camera makers, the high-tech system has the ability to use artificial intelligence to capture and process evidence information such as license plates, makers, models and other identifiers, and send real-time alerts to law enforcement agencies.
“Security cameras are one of the most effective tools needed to reduce property crimes and help successful prosecution,” said Captain Ethan Marquez of the Altadena Sheriff’s Office. “Our goal is to protect our communities, and these systems allow us to respond faster and better information when a crime occurs.”
The Sheriff’s Department’s initiative to deploy cameras is intended to increase visibility and provide investigators with additional tools.
Deputies also carry out highly visible patrols and crime control operations with undercover agents.
The Sheriff’s Department reminds residents that they can sign up for the Altadena Home Check program.
