Several fake images of the Hollywood sign on fire have been posted on social media, with some users falsely suggesting the iconic sign is “surrounded by fire.”
But that’s not the case.
Jeff Zarinnam, chairman of the Hollywood Sign Trust, told Forbes that the landmark is safe for now. Zarinnam said false posts being shared online are likely to be AI-generated images or videos.
The sign, overlooking Hollywood from Mount Lee in the Santa Monica Mountains, is not currently located in an evacuation zone, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The Sunset Fire that broke out in the Hollywood Hills Wednesday night started on the opposite side of Highway 101, well away from the sign.
The Yuhi Fire has stopped spreading and all evacuations have been lifted.
No fires were reported near the Hollywood sign.
The now iconic Hollywood sign read “Hollywood” when it was first erected in 1923 as a temporary advertisement for a local real estate development. It was then donated to the city in 1944, and “LAND” was removed in 1949.
A live stream of the Hollywood Sign can be viewed on the trust’s site.
