Air Canada said it would resume flights on Sunday after a government order to end flight attendant strikes.
The Canada Labor and Management Relations Board (CIRB) “instructed Air Canada to resume operations and flight attendants from Air Canada and Air Canada Dalughes to resume duties by 2pm,” the airline said in a statement.
The order comes after Job Minister Patti Hajidu moved on Saturday to impose binding arbitration. We extended our existing contracts until we reached a new contract.
More than 10,000 flight attendants have stepped away from work beyond wage and conflict schedules after months of negotiations over a new contract.
The strike disrupted travel plans around the world during the summer season, with around 700 flights suspended daily, forcing around 100,000 travelers to compete or stay for alternatives.
“With tonight’s first flight, operations will begin soon, but Air Canada expects it will take several days for operations to return to normal,” the airline said in a statement early on Sunday. “During this process, some flights will be cancelled over the next 7-10 days until the schedule stabilizes. Air Canada deeply regrets the inconveniences it has for its customers.”
