“American Idol” music director Robin Kay and her rock musician husband Tom Delca were accused of murdering them at Encino’s home, which is said to be called 911 after the crime, and top county prosecutors said it took another four days to discover their bodies.
Atty, Los Angeles County. Nathan Hochman said the couple had been shot with their own gun. New details of Kay and Delca’s murders were revealed at Monday’s Town Hall meeting in Encino. There, hundreds of residents gathered to express their frustration over the series of recent invasions that are worrisome in the area.
The revelation raises questions when the police handled the initial situation and when they learned exactly about the couple’s death.
Investigators believe Kay and Delca walked to 22-year-old Raymond Boudarian and robbed the $4.5 million Encino home on White Oak Avenue on July 10th.
Police alleged that Boudarian entered a heavily held home with large walls and security cameras through an unlocked door. “The conflict continued,” police said, after the couple returned to their homes, “they continued,” and the suspects shot them.
A search warrant affidavit filed by members of the San Fernando Valley murder division said police responded to two robbery calls on the day the couple was killed. Police have filed a warrant to review ring doorbell camera footage from a nearby home.
According to the warrant, the first call came on July 10th, just after 4pm at 4pm, when a neighbor reported an unidentified man trying to break into the couple’s home.
About 40 minutes later, police received a second call from someone in the couple’s home, claiming to be a resident who was reporting the suspect had broken in. The 911 operator could be heard saying, “Don’t shoot me.”
The caller advised that police response was not ultimately necessary and that follow-up attempts to reach the caller were unsuccessful, said Jennifer Faulk, director of LAPD Communications.
The warrant does not make clear whether the second call to police was from one of the two victims or from a Boudarian representing himself as a resident. Hochman said Monday that at one point in the incident, the suspect called 911 and identified himself with police. It’s not clear what he said to the dispatcher during the call.
Authorities sent officers and helicopters to the house in response to a phone call linked based on address, but they were unable to access the house and left.
“Officers arrived at the scene, conducted a check on the surrounding area and attempted to visually check the residence through a security gate. They attempted to enter at two access points, but both were locked and secured,” Faulksh said in a statement. “The house was fixed by surrounding walls. The airships visually checked their location and advised that there was no visible evidence of activity or intrusion.
Kay and Delca, both 70, were worried that the bodies found inside the house four days later weren’t seen or heard from them for several days after officers called police when they returned to their property for welfare checks. The couple, whose bodies were found in separate rooms, suffered multiple gunshot wounds, according to law enforcement sources.
It was the third time in recent months that LAPD officials have gone to the San Fernando Valley location after receiving the 911 call.
Menashe Hydra’s body was found on April 26th in a valley village apartment on the fifth floor after the attackers infiltrated an adjacent unit and leapt into Hydra’s troops from the balcony to attack him, investigators said.
Three days ago, the neighbor called 911 and reported that he had heard screams and the struggle from the apartment. The officer answered those calls, knocked on the door, and left without finding anything.
Eric Escamilla, 27, was eventually charged with murder, along with unrelated murders from 2022.
The same day Hydra’s body was found, police found the body of Alexandre Maudbaze, who had been beaten and died inside a Woodland Hills home. In that case, law enforcement sources said a woman inside the house was called LAPD around 12:30am, reporting that three people had broken into her home and beating her important others before suddenly cutting out. The 911 operator tried to make multiple calls without success. Shortly before 1am, officers arrived at the house, but no one answered the door. There was no noise inside the house and the blinds were dropping, sources told The Times.
ModeBadze was later found by an officer who was severely beaten with a traumatic head injury and eventually died from his injury. Authorities discovered the suspicious killer of ModeBadze hours after the incident.
Hochman said in the case of Kaye and Deluca, investigators were able to ultimately track Boodarian’s location by pinging his phone.
Hochman told the crowd Monday night, as a lifelong Angeleno, that the murder of the twins was personal to him.
“The government owes you one thing, and it’s safe,” Hochman said. “Robin and Tom didn’t experience safety that night. Safety failed.”
Still, Hochman stressed that if the couple were injured and police found them the same night, the couple would not have survived.
Law enforcement sources said the killings appeared random, but investigators are looking for a relationship between Kay and DeLuca with the suspect, and whether Boudarian was involved in a call for past service at the White Oak Avenue residence.
Boudarian was arrested on July 15th and is being held without bail at Twin Towers Correctional Facility. He is being charged with two counts of multiple murders, personal murder of firearms and murder, and special allegations while engaging in robbery.
According to court records, Boodarian has a history of criminal offences, including charges of battery charges, displaying deadly weapons and threatening to commit a crime with intent to fear. The charges were later dismissed after hearings related to mental competence and reserves.
According to IMDB, Kaye was the music producer for “American Idol” from 2009 to 2023, working on nearly 300 episodes. Her credits also included several “Miss Universe” television specials, numerous NAACP Image Awards ceremonies, “The Singing Bee” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”
Deluca was the most famous singer-songwriter for her 1986 album Down To the Wire. His latest release was the 2022 album Street Rock.
