Officials from the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department have notified the public of an attack-style rifle and 150 rounds of ammunition, with missing ammunition issued from the trunk of a patrol vehicle, officials said.
According to a LASD news release, the incident unfolded when it responded to a service call between 10pm and 11pm on Saturday evening.
” [Colt M4] The rifle is stored in the trunk of a patrol vehicle and is believed to have fallen out during transport,” the official said.
Authorities added that the rifle is located in a black hardshell storage case along with five magazines, each containing a 30 round .223 caliber bullet.

Although it is unclear exactly when the attack-style rifle and ammunition went missing, officials said department South Los Angeles station officials would soon begin a search for the station’s parking lot, boosting the four-mile route north of Normandy Avenue west of the Imperial Highway, and west to the Howthorne Brevard and west to the west.

LASD said surveillance footage from the area where it traveled has been reviewed, and during that time it has been notified that other local law enforcement agencies have lost rifles and ammunition missing.
“The Sheriff’s Department has launched an internal review of the incident, including an assessment of policies and procedures, to identify areas for improvement and to prevent future incidents from occurring,” the release states. “The department is committed to transparency and accountability when investigating this incident.”
KTLA contacted the department for comment and was told there was no update and that the authorities would not provide pictures of the weapons at this time.
