Zoran Mamdani’s victory over former New York governor Andrew Cuomo represents the victory of the new Democratic security guard, but his record in public service could leave something he hoped for Democrats who wanted to see someone like Cuomo with substantial experience.

His resume is shared with the New York Times, showing that “Jobs’ Patchwork” Mamdani worked before joining the state legislature.

In 2014, Mamdani gave a four-month stint as organizer of Seattle’s left-wing advocacy group Moveon. He then spent two months organising with another Houston group called Texpirg, and also worked on continuous tutoring gigs.
In 2015, Mamdani began her post-graduation advancing into political campaigns, but it is unclear whether these are paid jobs or simply volunteer opportunities. He first knocked on the door of city council candidate Ali Najimi and also conducted campaign fieldwork for Khader El-Yateem’s city council campaign. Mamdani reportedly spent some time as a field organizer for the Tiffany Bag District Attorney’s Campaign around 2019.
While spending time on these campaigns, Mamdani reportedly also worked as a music director and “third assistant director” in a Disney film about Indian chess genius directed by her mother Mira Naia, an Oscar-nominated filmmaker. He was also given the on-screen cameo role in the film.
“I actually created a playlist for Mira. Mira is also a mother. I know that nepotism and hard work can go a long way,” Mamdani slammed in a 2016 radio interview around the time of the film’s release.

At the time, Mamdani reportedly pursued a rap career, and went to a moniker called “Mr. Cardamom” and “Young Cardamom.” One of his songs was eventually featured in his mother’s film.
Mamdani continued his rap aspirations until at least 2017, but he still earns a small amount of royalty in his music, according to the mayoral candidate’s recent tax returns reviewed by the New York Post. As a member of the New York State Legislature, Mamdani earned a salary of around $131,000, but his royalty reached about $1,200 last year, Post found.
Mamdani’s campaign work became even more serious in 2018 when he became campaign manager for the Lost State Senate Bids of the Lost State Senate. Mamdani worked for a foreclosure prevention community group called Chaya that year, where she worked as a counselor for South Asian and Caribbean families in the face of potential foreclosure of the home. Mamdani reportedly left about a year later to run for the New York State Capitol in Astoria, New York.
Mamdani’s experience in the state legislature has not escaped criticism either.

According to the New York Post, he reportedly missed 50% of Congress votes in 2025, focusing on the mayoral campaign. Meanwhile, in his three years in the New York State Legislature, Mamdani reportedly arrived at three bills that were ultimately handed over to the law, according to the New York Times.
Critics say Mamdani’s experience in public services may be lacking, but he has been praised for his ability to digitally market social media and other online platforms, and in a profile he called the “Titktok Savant” by the New York Times in a March profile.
Among all the Democratic candidates running to become New York City’s next mayor, during a discussion earlier this month, they were asked whether the candidate regrets while working in politics.

“I regret not running for mayor in 2021,” Sen. Jessica Ramos replied. “I thought I needed more experience, but it turns out I need to make a good video.”
If Mamdani wins the general election, he will become the youngest leader in the city at the age of 34 since 1917.
Fox News Digital has repeatedly contacted the Mamdani campaign to comment on this story, but has never received a response.
