The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy was one of two people killed Tuesday morning in a crash crash on the 101 highway in Studio City.
The adjutant was a passenger in a vehicle involved in the early morning crash near the 170 and 134 highway interchanges. The Kia Sedan, Kia SUV and Box Truck were part of the collision near the exit of Tujunga Avenue.
In a news release, the California Highway Patrol said the Black Kia SUV was stopped in the lane as people got out of their cars. According to CHP, the box truck collided with two residents, Kia and the SUV.
The victims, a man and a woman, died at the scene. It was not immediately clear why Kia was stopped on the highway.
In a statement later Tuesday, the Sheriff’s Office identified the aide as 31-year-old Marcos Pena Jr. He was assigned to the Men’s Central Prison.
“We are heartbroken by the tragic and premature loss of Associate Pena Jr., who was taken from us too early,” Sheriff Robert G. Luna said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and all those who had the honor of serving with him.”
Deputy Pena joined LASD in July 2022.
Details about the cause of the crash were not available immediately. NBCLA reached out to ride-sharing companies for comment.
Cigarato was issued for the closure of all lanes on the westbound 101 highway at the Tujunga exit. All lanes have resumed and Cigarato was cancelled around 7:30am, CHP reported.
