The FBI announced Tuesday that a terrorist suspect wanted in connection with two animal welfare bombings in Northern California 20 years ago has been arrested in Britain.

Daniel Andreas San Diego, 46, who was arrested in Wales with the help of British authorities, was placed on the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorist list in 2009 after evading arrest.

Federal investigators alleged that on August 28, 2003, San Diego, then 25, planted two bombs at the offices of biotechnology company Chiron Corp. in Emeryville. The first bomb detonated early in the morning, but authorities say the second bomb detonated an hour after the first, likely killing or injuring first responders, and was discovered before the explosion took place, leaving the area is said to have been removed. off.

A company spokesperson at the time said the bombings followed a long and escalating series of “harassment incidents” against Sharon executives by animal rights activists that began in May of the same year. Activists said the company performs medical tests on laboratory animals.

The following month, on September 26, 2003, FBI officials claimed that San Diego planted another bomb at a Pleasanton business.

The FBI said in a statement at the time: “The device was wrapped in nails to inflict more serious injury to anyone within range of the debris.” “While no one was injured in either case, the construction, placement, and timing of the devices indicated San Diego’s intent to cause serious injury or death.”

A federal arrest warrant was issued on October 5, 2003, but San Diego disappeared before he could be taken into custody. In 2004, a federal grand jury returned an indictment against San Diego charging him with two counts of destruction or attempted destruction of property with explosives and two counts of using a destructive device in the commission of a crime of violence.

In January 2006, the FBI offered a $250,000 reward for information leading directly to San Diego’s arrest. Three years later, FBI officials announced they had placed San Diego on their list of most wanted terrorists. San Diego had been on the run ever since until his recent arrest.

“The arrest of Daniel San Diego after more than 20 years as a fugitive from two San Francisco-area bombings means that no matter how long it takes, the FBI will “This shows that we will find out and hold them accountable.” Written Statement. “There is a right way and a wrong way to express your opinion in our country, and resorting to violence and destruction of property is not the right way.”
