R-FLA Rep. Anna Paulina Luna is enforcing a voting on the law to allow new parents serving in Congress to vote remotely in the weeks surrounding the birth of their children.
Luna introduced the measure as a “privileged resolution” on Tuesday. This will give House leaders a two-day legislative day to take this measure.
This is the latest in the increasingly high-ridden stakes battle between Luna and House GOP leaders, working with Luna’s current House Freedom Caucus colleagues to prevent them from voting for legislation.
Despite opposition from House GOP leaders, Luna’s initial plan to quickly track her bill has something to do with the discharge petition. This is the mechanism by which you can get bills on the house floor if you get the majority of your lawmaker’s signatures.

However, Republican leaders inserted the language that was inserted into the package of the House Rules Committee’s unrelated bill Tuesday morning. This would have castrated Luna’s efforts with a move that ranked proxy vote GOP supporters.
Even Republicans on the House Rules Committee, who ultimately proceeded with the action, were unhappy with what was considered last-minute play by leadership that was made without explaining to GOP lawmakers, Fox News Digital said.
House GOP leaders will choose to either choose a procedural vote to “table” the solution or a procedural vote to introduce it to the relevant committee for consideration via traditional routes. But if that fails, given the slim majority of GOPs, the law could pass very well with support from all Democrats and a minority of House Republicans.

Luna accused conservatives of speaking “hostages” on the issue in a letter to a fellow House Republican on Monday night. She also announced that she was leaving the Freedom Caucus of the House, citing a small group of conservatives who forced her leaders to kill her measures.

In her letter, she praised House Freedom Caucus President Andy Harris (R-Md.). She called him “gentlemanly,” but added, “with a heavy heart, I have resigned from the Freedom Caucus.”

“I cannot continue to be part of the caucus that encourages misunderstanding with the media when a selected few people work outside the guidelines, misuse their names and where the broker’s backroom erodes its core values, where the line of compromise and transactions is blurred,” writes Luna.

Johnson believes that proxy votes are “unconstitutional” after a regular closing meeting of House Republicans last week, and again spoke about the issue this week.
