A community group said Thursday that he died this week after a walk along the Venice Canal amid the outbreak of mystical illness that has made dozens of dogs sick.
According to the Venice Canal Association, it is the seventh dog to die since dog owners began reporting that they had become ill with no obvious reason nearly two weeks ago.
After awakening to high temperatures and severe trembling, the dog was unable to use her hind legs. After the vet assessed the dog as having developed a heart murmur, the owner decided to euthanize her to relieve her pain.
“She was in pain and distress,” the dog owner told the association.
The latest dog was in an existing condition at age 15 to die. However, the owner said he was healthy and mentally good until Tuesday.
All dogs who died in or were taken to the ICU had similar symptoms, including voting, lethargy, seizures, or cardiac arrest. They all fell ill within 48 hours of a walk along the Venice Canal.
Los Angeles authorities are trying to identify a cause, but neighbors believe there may be something toxic that the dog may be in contact with the canal.
The neighbor said that the mystical illness prevents them and their four-legged companions from living their normal lives.
“Scary,” said Ramon Goni, a Venice resident. “It’s serious and we ask everyone in our community to be extremely vigilant and to take action as soon as possible to understand what’s going on with the dogs.”
