Several people were arrested near the Santa Ana Federal Building on Monday after protests spread across California on Monday.
“We are aware that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is currently implementing immigration enforcement measures in the city of Santa Ana, acknowledging that this news is causing fear and uncertainty among many in our community,” Santa Ana Police Department said in a statement.
“We want to ensure that the city of Santa Ana is fully compliant with California Value Act. The Santa Ana Police Department is not involved in and will not participate in the immigration enforcement efforts.”
The protest outside the Santa Ana federal building began with about 100 people in the afternoon and swelled to at least 1,000 as the evening progressed. After declaring illegal parliament at the rally, police began pushing out crowds in conflict.
“My husband is Mexican and my daughter is Mexican, and I just grew up in this community,” said the protester, Jazz. “That’s something I’m really proud of and I want to be a voice for those who can’t be voiced here today.”
It is not clear how many people were arrested, but some of the protesters were accused of throwing things at officers and causing fireworks.
