Arizona Republicans appointed contractor and small business owner Daniel Butierrez in the special primary to represent Arizona’s 7th Congressional District on Tuesday night.
As the district spans hundreds of miles along the US border with Mexico, all three Republican candidates have vowed to make border security a central issue in the campaign and carry out President Donald Trump’s robust crackdown on illegal immigration.
The Republican candidate will challenge former Pima County manager Adelita Grujarba, the winner of Tuesday night for the Democratic Party in a race to replace his father, Rep. Raul M. Grajarba, in November.
Grijalva passed away in March from lung cancer-related complications. Over 20 years representing Arizona in the House of Representatives, he has made him one of the longest serving US representatives in the state.

His vacancy has scuttled the competitive Democratic primary, including his daughter, who had support from prominent Democrats such as Sens. Bernie Sanders and Sens. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Also competing in the Democratic primary was Deja Foxx, a social media influencer and progressive activist. He has won support from our worthy leaders. David Hogg’s Super PAC sparked intraparty fighting this year when the former DNC vice-chairman announced plans to spend $20 million on leading incumbent Democrats in the Safe Blue District.
Former Arizona representative Daniel Hernandez, progressive businessman Patrick Harris Sr. and environmental justice scholar Jose Malvid Jr. also fought for democratic recognition.

In a surely blue district along the border with Mexico, representing parts of Toscon, Yuma and Nogales, Butierrez is likely to face a difficult battle in the special election this September.
Grillarva was re-electioned with 27 points in 2024 despite defeating former Vice President Kamala Harris statewide in Arizona last year.
Contractor and small business owner Butierrez received about 37% of the vote in 2024 as a Republican candidate for Grillarva.
Also competing in the Republican primary was Jorge Rivas, the owner of a Tucson-based Salvador-born restaurant.

Ribas attracted the public’s attention when Trump tweeted a photo of him wearing a “Latin Trump” cowboy hat at a rally in Phoenix in the 2020 presidential election. He briefly began his governor’s bid in 2022.
Finally, general contractor and business owner Jimmy Rodriguez ran on the mission of “securing our borders, boosting our economy and empowering our families across the CD7.”
