WASHINGTON (AP) — An armed man believed to be traveling from Indiana was shot dead by a US Secret Service agent near the White House after a confrontation early Sunday.
No one else was injured in the shooting that took place around midnight, about a block from the White House, according to a statement from the Secret Service. President Donald Trump was in Florida at the time of the shooting.
The Secret Service received information from local police about a “suicidal person” suspected of being a “suicidal individual” travelling from Indiana and allegedly found someone nearby who fit his description.
“As officers approached, individuals wielded firearms and armed conflicts continued, during which time they were fired by staff,” the Secret Service said in a statement.
The man was hospitalized. The Secret Service said his condition was “unknown.”
The capital police station will investigate as the shooting was linked to law enforcement officials. Messages left to the police station on Sunday were not immediately returned.
