“I’m a very lucky person.”
That was the message Jerry Heath had for the California Lottery after winning a life-changing $44.3 million Powerball jackpot.
Heath, a former Long Beach police detective and U.S. Army veteran, bought the winning ticket for the August raffle at Ralph’s in Dana Point.
Heath, a graduate of Cal State Long Beach (formerly Long Beach State University), said he came from poor roots and a low-income upbringing. He said he does it to have fun playing the lottery and to support the important mission of supporting California’s public education system.
According to Heath, having money doesn’t change your priorities or who you are.
“Now that I’m a millionaire, I can’t forget where I came from,” Heath said. Playing the lottery is my only luxury. ”
He told lottery officials that he plans to share his winnings with his daughter and grandchildren, while enjoying the excitement of playing the lottery.
Before he won Powerball, he played the lottery every day, but now he’s set his sights on SuperLotto Plus, a California-only game.
Heath is hoping to become the next Terry Thomas who won the $54 million SuperLotto Plus jackpot in July’s draw. The California Lottery said Thomas bought the ticket at Woodland.
California Lottery players have a chance to join the billionaire’s club after Tuesday night’s Mega Millions drawing. Sales of tickets to win the $541 million jackpot will end 15 minutes before the 8 p.m. drawing.
