The new, modest California Highway Patrol vehicle was active Monday after discovering two vehicles racing westwards on Chino’s 60 highway.
Two vehicles filmed on dashcam video, the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Chrysler 300, both speed up past the modest CHP vehicles.
The 21-year-old from Moreno Valley, driving a Chrysler, was arrested while pursuing in Rancho Cucamonga for speeding and reckless driving. His car is towed and he faces criminal charges. According to the CHP, the Alfa Romeo driver could be arrested later.
The video showed CHP’s latest, specially marked Dodge Durangos, on its mission to crack down on “video game style” driving on highways across the state.
In May, CHP introduced 100 new high-performance black and grey vehicle transport ships with faded markings to help officers blend into traffic, according to the CHP.
“The new vehicle gives our officers a significant advantage,” CHP Commissioner Sean Dury said in a news release. “They allow them to identify and stop drivers who are putting others at risk, but they have a professional and visible presence when enforcement action is needed.”
All 100 specially marked patrol vehicles are strategically located along the busiest highways, high-risk roads throughout the state.
The CHP also said speed is to blame 30% of all crashes, including contributing to traffic deaths and injuries.
More than 390,000 crashes occur statewide each year, with nearly a day of reckless driving reports.
Last year, patrol officials gave approximately 18,000 quotes to drivers above 100 mph per hour, according to the CHP.
