LA County health officials advise that a person with measles recently arrived in Los Angeles and visited at least two businesses before the virus was detected.
The person is a LA County resident who arrived at LAX Terminal B on March 5th, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. They flew from the airline’s Taipei to Flight 8 on China Airlines, the LA route, and were at Tom Bradley International Terminal from 7pm to 10pm that night.
Passengers assigned to specific seats that may have been exposed during flight will be notified by the local health ministry, officials said, adding that the Centers for Disease Control is assisting in the notification process.

“Individuals who were in those locations on the specified date and time may be at risk of developing measles due to exposure to this individual,” the health department said in a breaking news published Tuesday.

Exposed individuals should check whether they have been vaccinated from measles and if they are not at risk of developing the disease. Health officials say symptoms usually take one to three weeks to develop after exposure.
Common symptoms of measles include:
High fever (101 degrees or higher) Cough nose red and watery eyes are measles rash (appears 3-5 days after signs of other illnesses)
According to LACDPH, the virus can spread into the air when an infected person breathes, speaks, coughs, or sneezes. Even after an infected person leaves the area, it can remain in the air and on the surface for hours.
“Infected individuals can spread the disease up to four days before the measles rash appears, and can be sprayed up to four days after the rash appears,” the official said. “If someone else breathes contaminated air or touches an infected surface, it can get infected by touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.”

Public health officials said all people in California who have been diagnosed with measles so far have travelled in some kind of international. The last measles incident for LA County residents came in February 2024, Lacdph added.
Measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccines can prevent measles. Officials say most health insurance covers the costs of the vaccine. Insured persons should check with their doctor or pharmacy to see which vaccines are being offered.

This latest case of measles comes two weeks after an infant in Orange County arrived in LA from South Korea with measles, a nationwide outbreak in 12 states.
As of March 6, 222 measles cases have been reported across the US this year, with numbers likely to increase, according to the CDC.
It has been reported because at least one death occurred. This was a Texas unvaccinated school-age child who died last month from the virus.
Another unvaccinated person in New Mexico tested positive for measles after the death of measles. However, their official cause of death is still under investigation.
