An arson suspect was arrested Friday for allegedly starting a wildfire in Irwindale.
According to the Irwindale Police Department, the suspect has been identified as Maninder Singh, 33, of Baldwin Park.
Around 7 a.m., Los Angeles County Fire Rescue was called to a fire near Arrow Highway and the 605 Freeway. Crews discovered the fire in a tunnel along the San Gabriel River Trail near Live Oak Lane.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire. The suspect was found nearby and taken into custody on charges of arson and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Friday’s incident marks the second arson-related arrest in Irwindale this week. Dozens of people have been arrested on charges of robbery, looting and arson since devastating wildfires broke out in the Los Angeles metropolitan area.
Some homeowners have chosen not to comply with evacuation orders to protect their properties from looters and trespassers.
“The Irwindale Police Department urges residents to avoid using flammable materials in the riverbed and surrounding areas,” authorities said in a statement. “Such conduct poses a significant risk to public safety, property and the environment. The Irwindale Police Department remains committed to taking swift action against those who endanger our community. I’m here.”
