The Orange County Fire Department (OCFA) announced that it has successfully used artificial intelligence to detect brush fires for the first time.
The agency announced Friday that it used artificial intelligence to detect and respond to a wildfire in Black Star Canyon last month.
“Authorities have been using AI alongside 9-1-1 calls to detect wildfires for some time, but this is the first time a fire has been detected solely by AI,” OCFA said in a social media release. stated in a media post.
The fire occurred on Dec. 4, 2024, at approximately 2 a.m. Dispatchers were notified of the fire by the artificial intelligence of UC San Diego’s ALERTCalifornia camera network.
Thanks to early detection, firefighters were able to respond quickly and contain the fire to less than a quarter acre. The fire did not cause any damage to any homes or structures, and due to the rapid detection and response, there were no injuries or the need for evacuation.
“This is an example of how we are leveraging emerging technologies and strategic partnerships to fight wildfires,” OCFA Fire Chief Brian Fennessy said in a statement. “Wildfire risk is now a year-round problem, and early detection and cooperation are essential to protect life and property.”
