Mayor Karen Bass said that the nightly curfew in downtown Los Angeles was in effect Monday, allowing businesses struggling to stay open until the evening.
Night Wew, which began every night at 8pm last Tuesday, announced it would start at 10pm. The curfew continues to be lifted at 6am
“Coupled with continued crime prevention efforts, the curfew has largely been successful in protecting shops, restaurants, businesses and residential communities from bad actors who don’t care about the immigrant community,” Bass said in a press release.
The Bus enacted a curfew last week after five days of chaotic and sporadic violent protests that occurred in response to President Trump’s crackdown on immigration in Southern California. The curfew also responded to looting downtown stores and vandalism at buildings, including city hall.
The curfew applies to downtown areas, from five highways to 110 highways and 10 highways to where the 110 highways and five highways merge, Bass said.
Bass ‘Crffew’s time savings are announced as arrests have fallen downtown in recent days. Bass said the reduction in crime was part of the reason why she reduced curfew times.
“This coordinated curfew reflects the progress we have made in reducing crime and vandalism within the curfew zone. It said we have not disappointed the guards. LAPD will maintain a strong presence in the downtown area to ensure the safety of our residents, businesses and demonstrators.”
LAPD has arrested a total of 575 people since the protest began on June 7, including 14 people for looting, LAPD said in a press release.
Last Tuesday, a curfew was enacted, with 203 people arrested for failing to dissolve, and 17 people arrested for violating the curfew.
On Saturday, 35 people were arrested for violating curfews, but only one person was arrested for failing to break up, police said.
Ten police officers have been injured since the protest began, LAPD said.
The curfew was difficult for businesses within its boundaries.
“The curfew has been effective in reducing isolated incidents of violent and destructive behavior, but it is not a viable tool for long-term, especially for companies that rely on evening sponsorship.”
