With Major League Baseball back, Dodger fans won’t be able to see the 2024 World Series champions play again.
This is especially true this season in the Asian American community in Southern California.
Lifelong Dodger fan Diana Iketani woke up at 3am to watch the Dodgers two-game sweep of the Chicago Cubs at Tokyo Dome on March 18th and 19th.
“It’s very exciting to see a team that is competing with major Japanese and foreign players, compete and be Japanese-American,” Iketani said.
Asian American fans say Shohei Ohtani is doing something for them, the late Dodger star Fernando Valenzuela did for Latin fans.
“I’m half a Filipino and I take pride in my legacy,” said 12-year-old fan Luka Samson. “I went to this Philippine Dodger game and they gave us these cool jerseys.”
Otani, manager Dave Roberts, pitchers Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Saga Roki were born in Japan.
Tommy Edman is half the Korean, but South Korean infielder Hee Song Kim made his MLB debut this year.
“It’s so cool to see Asians in the league and get the best,” Samson continued.
