NEW YORK (AP) — At least three people have been killed in a shooting Monday in a midtown Manhattan office building, including a New York City police officer, sources told The Associated Press.
The suspect was identified as Nevada’s Shane Tamra, and the two explained the investigation. Sources said he fatally shot himself.
Law enforcement officials found the identification of Tamra’s body, including a hidden carry permit from Las Vegas, people said. People were not allowed to discuss the details of the ongoing investigation and spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
The New York Fire Department said emergency crews were called to the Park Avenue office building at about 6:30pm to report the shooting. The building houses some of the country’s top financial companies and the National Football League.
Jessica Chen told ABC News that she “heard multiple shots from the ground floor, continuing to ring,” and was watching the presentation with dozens of people upstairs.
She and the others came across the meeting room, barricaded tables against the door.
“We were honestly, really scared,” she said.
Mayor Eric Adams said several people were injured. He posted clips on social media, leaving him still placed by people still inside the office building as police officers were doing floor-by-floor searches. Democrats said he headed to the hospital to talk to the family and loved ones involved.
Local TV footage showed a line of people evacuating office buildings with their hands placed on their hands. The building includes Blackstone offices and the Irish consulate general.
Some of the financial workers in the office building beneath the block were picking up dinner at a restaurant in the corner when they saw people running after hearing the loud noise.
“It was like a crowd panic,” Anna Smith said. They stayed there for about 2 hours before being told they could leave.
The building where the shooting took place is located in a busy area of Midtown, about a block east of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, with a walk just north of Grand Central Terminal.
The city’s emergency management warning system warned of traffic delays, road closures and disruptions in public transport in the area.
Until late July, New York City has the pace to have the least murder and fewest people in gunfire than any other year in recent decades.
