ATM bombing in Northern California leads to arrests in Newport Beach

Last week, the last member of the infamous Chilean Bank robbery crew who stole millions of people in West Coast crimes in Newport Beach, announced that federal officials had announced.

In a news release, U.S. Department of Justice officials are said to have crews gained more than $4 million in cash between May and October 2024, attacking more than 29 banks and credit unions in California, Oregon and Washington, and using Airbnb in Welch, Oregon.

The prosecutor, a well-organized, equipment team, said he would remain in other rentals near the ATMs they are targeting, whilst disguising as construction workers in vests and construction hats.

Using car rentals from the black market, South American crews were known to use Signal Jammers, which interfered with Wi-Fi enabled alarm systems and used spray paint to cover surveillance cameras.

On October 31, 2024, 11 of the 12 suspects were indicted by the Federal Jury on charges of bank robbery and conspiracy to commit bank robbery.

Federal agents arrested crews in California, Florida and Chile, but Oregon Airbnb equipment was seized. Investigators collected clothing on rentals that could be used for DNA matching, and placed GoPro cameras with memory cards.

In May, the agents found a video file on their memory card, along with one of the nominated defendants, Camilo Guzman Sepulveda and the 12th suspect. Using facial recognition technology, he was later identified as Diego Ananias Arelano Diaz.

Arerano Diaz, who is also known as Fabio Hernandez, was arrested in La County in February for attacking a firefighter or police officer with a deadly weapon. After being released on a $75,000 bond, he disappeared for five months.

He resurfaced on July 20 after Bay Area San Ramon police identified him as a suspect involved in blowing up an ATM at a target store in the area.

Details are limited and it is unclear how law enforcement followed him, but he was taken into custody in Newport Beach on July 29th.

Areranodias faces up to 25 years in federal prison if convicted of being indicted.
