At least 113 people are known to have died when the roof of a Dominican Republic nightclub collapsed Tuesday morning, with 155 people being taken to local hospitals, officials said earlier Wednesday.

Juan Manuel Mendes, director of the country’s emergency operations centre, said at a press conference Wednesday that the Dominican Navy and firefighters were involved in the rescue operations.

Victims of the fatal collapse include two former MLB players and the governor.

Mendes also confirmed the death of Ruby Perez, a popular meringue singer who played at the club during the disaster. His body was pulled out of the tile rub by the rescuer.

The number of injuries could be well above 155. This means that the number of ambulances will move to the local hospital. Authorities said some of the ambulances took three people at once.

Dominican Senator Aneudy Ortiz Sajiun posted an Instagram video showing him and a group of officials praying at the Jet Set Club location.

The cause of the collapse remains unknown. In 2023, the Jetset Club said in an Instagram statement that the fire broke out after the power plant was struck by lightning.
