Authorities were searching for a kayaker on Saturday that fell into the water along the American River near Auburn, California, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said.
The missing man was on the kayak Friday evening when the boat capsized by the fast-running water beneath Handsbridge near Auburn, the sheriff’s office said.
The other man reached a nearby rock and safely returned to the coast, the sheriff’s office said. The missing man has not been identified and officials said it is not known that he may still be alive.
“It’s hard to say,” said Elise Sovier, a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office. “I don’t want to give up hope until you know.”
Authorities began searching for missing kayakers on Friday. The dive team also went out on the water on Saturday morning, she said.
The river may look attractive on a sunny day, but authorities say people should avoid getting into the water during this time of year.
“The water is very quick and it’s very cold because it comes from the mountains. This is a known dangerous part of the American River,” she said.
The Sheriff’s Office worked with Cal Fire’s Nevada Yuba-Placer unit in the search. State Parks, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office and the California Highway Patrol also provided assistance, according to a social media post from the Placer County Sheriff’s Office on Friday.
