Baby Hippo refuses to leave the pool until he “glares at Mom” – NBC Los Angeles

There seems to be something universal about “mom’s gaze.”

Videos of funny interactions between a baby hippo and his mother become a virus, with over 4.6 million likes as social media users compare standoffs between toddlers and his mother! I’ve won.

In Tiktok, shared by Tangany Kawaildlife Park in Goddard, Kansas, Mars, a five-week Pygmy Hippopotamas calf, is seen refusing to leave the pool until her mother Posey has to intervene.

“We’re telling Mars that it’s time to get out of the pool and that mothers are leaving,” the video text says, but the caption says, “Mom is better!”

The clip began with Mars being rescued from the pool by the zoo’s Zookeeper, and the signal’s playing time ended. However, the wiggling hippo escapes and returns to the water. The camera pans into Posie while he happily returns to the swim.

Mars then leaps out of the water and drives its mother out of the area.

“This is a pretty common event at the end of the day,” says Dr. Samantha Rasaku, a curator of zoo research and welfare.

The hippo stayed indoors overnight and getting Mars inside was a struggle. Adult hippos know that they will be fed when they enter, so they easily enter. “So he’s not ready to eat yet, so he’s less motivated to go inside,” she explains.

Born June 26th, Mars is about 40 pounds and is covered in a mucus-like substance called “blood sweat,” says Russak. “It’s a secretion that helps keep the skin dry and helps prevent sunburn. But basically he’ll turn out to be a greasy avocado.”

“So between his size and his secretion, it’s really hard to get him to come and bring him inside. So if we can bring Mama back or she’s in an impatient way because she wants to go inside, she’ll turn around and give him a small groan,” she continues. “It seems universal. Everywhere mothers just have that power over a baby. Someone commented and said, “She must have used his three names perfectly.” ”

Commentary people were forced to compare Posey’s response to that of their infant and human mothers. Many mentioned “mom’s stare,” an expression that mothers use to communicate with their children without speaking. It is usually necessary when children are cheating or when the mother has to assert her authority.

Thousands flocked to the Thai Zoo to celebrate Moo Deng’s first birthday, a baby pygmy bappo who became a social media sensation in 2024.

“Mom” is universal in all species,” one wrote.

Another added, “She gave him a look.”

Others imagined what Posi had told Mars to drive him out of the pool.

“I’ve heard women say they’re going to give you water,” one person wrote from a positive perspective.

“Martian Potato Jones is now out of the water,” another commented.

The third writes, “Mom: 1, 2…Baby: Okay, Mom *Glance: You’re a snitch…”

“Mom: ‘Look back and start walking. Looking back, if you haven’t left that pool, we’re having problems, K?”

Another added, “So toddlers and all species are the same.”
