The case of a bald chick lacking in Big Bear, which spurred research across the internet and endless speculation, has reached an unfortunate conclusion.
In a Saturday night social media post, Big Bear Bear Valley Friends confirmed the death of one of the three chicks recently hatched by Hubed Eagle couple Jackie and Shadow.
“We are deeply saddened to report that Jackie and one of the Shadow chicks failed to overcome the winter storm that brought two feet of snow to the area,” the Post reads in part. “As the snow melted, a shorter snow balm made the chick partially visible in the nest bowl.”
The news comes after one chick was significantly missing on Friday morning. The third chick was last spotted after being fed the night before at 6pm.
Between these two feedings, a violent winter storm gained up to 2 feet of snow in the large bear area and the San Bernardino Mountains.

Due to the accumulation of snow, a significant portion of the Eagle Nest could not be seen by friends at Big Bear Valley cameras, which operate 24/7. The dead chicks are partially visible as the snow begins to melt.
A Big Bear Valley friend says he can’t find out how the chick died.
“In the midst of sadness, we want to salute this chick’s life for the courage to do it and the joy that we have brought to us in our short time here,” the post reads.
The other two chicks remain healthy, the nonprofit said. They received nine feedings from their parents all day on Saturday.
“Thank you for taking great care of Jackie, Shadow and their chicks,” Big Bear Valley friends said.
