The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Officer has been identified as Samuel Liberos, a Baldwin Park Police Department officer who was fatally shot on work Saturday.

Liberos was one of two officers shot while responding to the appeal of an armed man in a residential area in Baldwin Park. According to the California Highway Patrol, a shooting was reported in the 4200 block of Philharmonic Store Avenue around 7:15pm.

The gloomy procession from Baldwin Park to Boyle Heights continued to be fatal as the bodies of the killed officer were taken to the Los Angeles County Medical Examination Office.

“Our officer was a great guy,” Baldwin Park Police Chief Robert Lopez said at a press conference shortly after midnight on Sunday. “He was an avid snowboarder and a Dodger fan. One interesting thing I found is that he travels and sees the Dodgers play in various stadiums in the US. It’s very tragic to have to deal with this.”

It is unknown whether Liberus was married or had children.

A growing memorial was placed outside the Baldwin Park Police Station, where flowers, candles and American flags adorned the space as the public paid tribute to the murdered officer.

The surviving officer was said to be in stable condition, just like the gunman who fired. The surviving officer, identified as Anthony Pimentel, was later released from the hospital.

The shooting came as police responded to an appeal from an armed man in the area and reports of unresponsive people lying on the ground. The individual suffering from a gunshot wound died at a nearby hospital. Their identity has not been released.

Upon arriving at the scene, Riveros and Pimentel were shot by the suspect. According to Lasd, the officers responded and responded.

“These officers, they didn’t hesitate,” said Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna. “They get dispatched, someone may need help, there are fire shots, they go over there without hesitation. That’s what these guys and women do every day.”

The department issued a statement on Sunday with the identities of its officers. In it, LASD said Liberos’ losses are “deeply felt” by the Baldwin Park community and “law enforcement.”

“This is a heartbreaking, deeply devastating tragedy,” read Lasd’s statement. “Officer Liberos made the ultimate sacrifice to serve his community. He, along with Officer Pimentel and his fellow officers, bravely responded to dangerous calls and fully aware of the risks involved.

The suspect’s name has not been released. It is unclear what charges he will face.

Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the LASD Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. Anonymous tips can be created by contacting Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477).
