In an effort to curb wildlife euthanasia and provide a humanitarian solution to rodent problems, volunteers at Burbank Animal Shelter (VBA) are calling on the community to help place what they call “working cats” in barns, backyards, warehouses and other non-traditional homes.
These cats – wild by nature and temperament – are not suitable for indoor living or human relationships. However, through the shelter barn cat program, they can still find a place to live their lives with purpose and protection.
“These are not house cats,” the group emphasized in a recent release. “They are wild and are completely satisfied with living in barns, gardens or work areas and avoid human contact.”
Organizations sometimes hear stories of these animals being used to humans, with the exception of such results.

Each cat is castrated or castrated, vaccinated, delivered to a working home by VBAS volunteers, and initially kept in a kennel to adapt to their new location.
Adopters are asked to provide ongoing food, water and shelter, and cats help control local pests.
Shelters often prioritize domestic and adoptable animals, but the fate of non-social stray cats is often bleak.
“Sadly, the overwhelming majority of wild cats brought to shelter are euthanized because they don’t have enough workforce for them,” the release states.

The Barn Cat program, run by non-profit VBAS, aims to reverse that trend. Since its founding, the initiative has sought to combine cats with a wide range of environments, including cats, stables, vineyards, warehouses and even residential yards.
Shelters now have many working cats ready for placement, and the need for a new home is urgent.
People with appropriate outdoor or industrial spaces are encouraged to consider adoption as a mutually beneficial arrangement that saves lives and supports natural pest control, rather than dating.
