Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and businessman Rick Caruso announced Thursday that they will work with Lakers head coach JJ Redick to rebuild the Parisades Recreation Center after being destroyed in a January wildfire.
Reddick, who lost his home in Pacific Palisades, has announced a public-private partnership to rebuild the community’s landmarks.
“It was where my family and I spent almost every day,” Reddick said. “Our kids are meeting flag football, basketball, baseball, after-school friends. It was a place for them to grow and create friendships, and a place where everyone in this community is together.”
The plan has been created, but there is no estimate for the price tag for the project, which says it will take at least 18-24 months for Caurso to complete.
Bass called the announcement a major step in the healing process and said he had no problem working with Caruso, who competed in the 2022 mayoral election.
“The goal is to restore and heal this community,” Bass said. “There’s nothing more important than that. I think it would be appropriate for us to come together.”
The city will partner with Redick’s group, LA Strong Sports and Steadfast LA Nonpofit in Caruso.
“We want to make sure we’re not only rebuilding Rec Center, but better rebuilding it,” Bass says.
