Bass appoints Imelda Padilla to Metro’s board

Mayor Karen Bass has appointed Los Angeles City Councilman Imelda Padilla to the Metro board of directors.

Padilla will represent the East San Fernando Valley and replace former city councillor Paul Clecorian, who competed last year. Padilla represents the eastern and central valley neighborhoods and will play a leadership role in regional traffic expansion projects, the mayor’s office announced Wednesday. The multi-billion dollar effort includes a light rail line for the Van Nuys Boulevard and a north-south rail line for the Sepulveda Pass.

“My focus has always been to become a world-class public transport system that provides high quality transportation to Angelenos, which accepts visitors from around the world and relies on the system,” Bus Mayor said in a statement.

Padilla’s priorities include expanding its fare assistance program and improving the reliability and safety of its services.

“Public transport should be a safe, reliable and dignified option for all Angeleno. Whether they are working, running errands, or commuting to explore our city,” Padilla said in a statement. “But transport is more than just mobility. It is equity, economic opportunity, and quality of life for all generations. I am honored to serve on the Metro Commission. I look forward to working with my colleagues to build a world-class, equitable transportation system that will strengthen our communities, connect our communities, and improve the daily lives of all who rely on public transport.”

Padilla won six city council district six seats for the first time in 2023 after former council member expelled Martinez resigned and was re-elected last year. Bass approved Padilla for the seat.

Over the past few months, the mayor and Padilla have clashed over approval of the lease at Vanneis airport. Padilla campaigned against the lease last year to support residents who expressed protest against the contract with the helicopter company. Bass sought approval and warned that a denial could put the city’s federal funds from the Federal Aviation Administration at risk. Ultimately, the council approved the lease.

The bass sitting on the board will acquire three Metro appointees. Her other appointees include Katie Jaroslavsky, a councillor elected under Mayor Eric Garcetti, and board member Jacqueline DuPont Walker.
