Fresh off touring the devastation caused by wildfires in the Los Angeles area on Thursday, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass made it clear to residents Friday that her top priority is getting people back into their homes.
Although there is still a fire risk as the Santa Ana winds pick up even more early next week, Bass said, “We’re hopeful that we won’t get anywhere near the intensity that we saw at the beginning of this situation.”
Meanwhile, some evacuation orders have been lifted and officials are working hard to ensure safe areas for residents to return to their homes, which Bass said is a top priority for her and all other public officials. he said.
“Once the fire is completely extinguished, there is no higher priority than getting people back into their homes,” she said.
Part of that process includes rebuilding thousands of homes and finding accommodation for evacuees, and Bass said local governments will reorganize “around urgency, common sense and capacity.” By doing so, he said, he will achieve these and other challenges.
More information will be available next week, when Bass is expected to announce a series of executive orders aimed at fire recovery.
“This is an unprecedented natural disaster that requires an unprecedented response,” Bass said. “We’re going to do everything we can to clear the way for people to get home.”
