Beloved singer-songwriter and Beach Boys co-creator Brian Wilson passed away at the age of 82.
The singer’s family released the news in a statement on his website.
“We are heartbroken to announce the death of our beloved Father Brian Wilson. We are speechless now. Our family is grieving, so at this point please respect our privacy. We find ourselves sharing our grief with the world. Love and mercy.”
Wilson died recently after being placed in a court sanctuary to administer his personal and medical decisions due to what he called a “major neurocognitive disorder,” similar to dementia.
At a hearing in May, Los Angeles Superior Court Court Gus T. May approved the petition filed by Wilson’s family and inner circle after the death of his wife, Melinda Ledbetter Wilson.
Longtime Wilson representatives, spokesman Jean Sieber and manager Lee Anne Heard can be appointed as his guardians.
According to a family statement at the time, Wilson, his seven children, his caregiver and his doctor consulted before the petition was filed. The decision was to ensure that there is no “extreme change” and that “Brian will be able to continue working on his current project with all his family and friends enjoyment.”
Wilson’s petition did not seek a property guardian because his assets are in the trust and are difficult to become a trustee.
Deeply respected and praised as a co-founder, producer, arranger, chief songwriter and stunning innovator of vocal harmony, Wilson struggled with the mental health and substance abuse issues that defeated his career in the 1960s.
He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 along with his bandmates, including his brothers Carl and Dennis, and his cousin Mike Love.
