President Biden on Tuesday signed a proclamation establishing Chuckwalla National Monument and Satytla Highlands National Monument, protecting hundreds of thousands of acres of land in California, in his final week in office.

The ceremony was postponed for a week due to wildfires raging in Southern California, and Biden said he had wanted to hold the ceremony in the state but had to relocate it to the White House.

“We have had the most aggressive climate policies in the history of the world,” the president said in the East Room of the White House before discussing national monuments. “Our natural wonders are the heart and soul of our nation.”

In his second week in office, he signed an executive order establishing the first-ever conservation goal of protecting 30% of America’s lands and waters by 2030. “I’ve been calling it that for the past four years.” Over the years, we have put America on track to achieve its audacious goals, rebuilding, creating new national monuments, and reclaiming hundreds of millions of acres of land across America from New England to America. We have conserved water. From Minnesota and Texas to Colorado, Arizona and Alaska. ”

Sattitra Highlands National Monument protects more than 224,000 acres of land in Northern California’s Modoc National Forest, Shasta Trinity National Forest, and Klamath National Forest, and is home to “tribal ancestral homelands, historical and scientific treasures, rare flora and fauna, and Provides protection for headwaters that are some of the most important water sources,” the U.S. Forest Service said.
