According to reports, President Biden still regrets withdrawing from the 2024 presidential race last summer after mounting pressure from Democrats to do so.

The Washington Post, citing people familiar with the matter, said the president recently performed poorly in the June debate and was forced to withdraw from the race due to low approval ratings. He reportedly told the nation that he still believes he defeated Trump in the November election. conversation.

After the June 27 debate, more and more Democrats began calling for him to resign and for someone else to run in his place.

The president saw much of his funding dry up last summer as donors began to doubt his chances of defeating Trump.

Biden withdrew from the race on July 21 and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, with just over three months left until the election.

Trump defeated Harris by 2.2 million votes.

According to the Post, Mr. Biden has cautioned aides not to criticize Ms. Harris, even though he has maintained that he could have won.

The New York Times reported in September that even after leaving office, Biden believed he could defeat Trump, who defeated him in his first term in 2020.

Rep. James Clyburn, D.C., may disagree.

Clyburn, who met with Biden earlier this year, told the Post that while discussing style and content, he told the president, “Your style is not appropriate for the environment we’re in right now.”

Jake Sullivan, Biden’s national security adviser, told the Post: “There’s only one answer to how we govern the United States right now to set it up for long-term success. “The question may be how to govern in response to the midterm elections and the presidential election.” With a different answer, the president did something that really put America in a strong position. ”

Biden acknowledged other mistakes, including his performance in the debate, and also said he regretted choosing Merrick Garland to be attorney general, the Post reported.

Convinced by aides who said Garland would be the unanimous nominee, Biden privately said he felt Garland was moving too slowly to prosecute Trump, while at the same time asking his son, Hunter. They argued that his prosecution had been too aggressive.
