President Biden’s final list of commutations was released Friday afternoon, listing the names and registration numbers of approximately 2,500 prisoners whose sentences were commuted as a result of the president’s action.

The commutation cements Biden’s status as the president with the most individual pardons and commutations. President Biden’s statement said it was determined that those on the list received disproportionately harsh sentences compared to what they would currently receive for drug crimes.

“Today’s clemency action provides relief to individuals sentenced to long sentences based on discredited distinctions between crack cocaine and powder cocaine, and strengthens outdated sentencing for drug crimes,” Biden said in a statement Friday. It is what we provide.” “As Congress recognized through the Fair Sentencing Act and the First Step Act, now is the time to equalize these sentencing disparities.”

West Virginia Democrat says Biden’s ‘terrible’ pardon choices are ‘what we expected from Trump’

The new list of commutations comes after Biden last month commuted the sentences of about 1,500 people, mostly accused of crimes, while on home confinement during the coronavirus pandemic, already the largest single-day presidential pardon. The announcement was made following the launch. A non-violent drug crime, according to the White House.

Following last month’s commutations, several Democratic lawmakers called on Biden to grant more pardons and commutations to people serving long sentences. Massachusetts Representative Ayanna Pressley, who was among those who pressed Biden to act, praised the president’s actions on Friday.

“Today, President Biden is taking another historic, transformative and compassionate step toward healing and reunifying families by commuting the sentences of thousands of people serving unjustly long sentences. This is a direct result of the failed policies of the war on drugs,” said Congressman Pressley. Said.

“With this action, President Biden…is demonstrating the power of tolerance to address injustice in our criminal legal system. I want President Biden to act boldly and use tolerance to make a difference and save lives. Thank you for continuing. This is what we have been calling for.” Because this is the type of leadership that is needed now, and this will be a defining part of President Biden’s legacy. ”
