Former President Joe Biden marked his first public appearance since he announced he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer in honor of Fallen Services members and the Gold Star family on Friday at a Delaware anniversary service.
“Together, we remember the debts we owe to the US military,” Biden said at an event sponsored by Delaware’s Veteran Affairs Committee.
“The military is a solid spine, the spine of our nation,” Biden said. “Our military, veterans, our military families, especially the Gold Star families. Only about 1% of all Americans defend 99% of us. 1%. Only 1% of Americans put the ultimate sacrifice at risk.

The Gold Star Family is a close relative of a worker who died while working in the role.
For the Biden family, the May 30th mark, 10 years after Biden’s son Beau died of a brain tumor, is very personal. Beau Biden served in the Delaware Army National Guard for more than a decade, completing a tour in Iraq, where he won a bronze star for his service and became the state’s attorney general before his death.
Biden said his son’s most proud moment was wearing his uniform and appearing at the event eased the pain of his son’s loss. He also provided words of encouragement to others who suffered from loss.

“Everyone who comes here today and comes to the grief that has been grieving in your heart, know that you are not alone,” Biden said. “You are never alone, and you will never forget your loved one. A period.”
Biden said he remembered that while Beau Biden’s son Hunter, 19, attended the event, he was also attending the exact same anniversary event as Senator Beau Biden, who is the same age.

The former president also said politics has been split, but said the sacrifices of the people in the military to protect democracy should unite everyone.
“Our military doesn’t wear uniforms that say I’m a Democrat or a Republican. I say I’m an American,” Biden said. “I’m American. That’s me.”
Biden announced on May 18 that he had been diagnosed with a “aggressive form” of prostate cancer. The former president’s office later said he had never been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
The announcement came amid scrutiny of inauguration’s mental fitness amid growing scrutiny of Biden’s mental fitness, following the publication of multiple books this year that documented the deterioration of Biden’s mental capabilities.
Similarly, a leaked audio recording of an October 2023 interview with former special advisor Robert Huar was released in May, with Biden having a hard time getting off his words and looking like he would forget the year his son passed away.
