Blake Snell earned his Dodgers debut, Tescal Hernandez hit a three-run homer, and Los Angeles defeated the Detroit Tigers 5-4 on Thursday in his home opener.
Snell (1-0) is a two-time Cy Young Award winner who signed with the Dodgers as a free agent in the offseason, allowing two runs and five hits in five innings. The left-handed hit two and walked four.
Hernandez was home to Taric Scuvall (0-1) on the first pitch with two outs in the fifth, bringing the Dodgers back 4-2 to the front. Otani reached a fielder’s choice, and Mookie Betts walked to establish Hernandez.
Otani was seventh home and extended the lead to 5-3.
The Dodgers improved to 3-0, opening the season this month with a victory with the Chicago Cubs in Tokyo.
The Defending World Series champion and a sold-out crowd of 53,595 people arrived on the field in a blue convertible driven by rapper Ice Cube before the match.
Snell’s wild pitch led to Spencer Torkelson taking the Tigers’ first run in fourth place.
Snell gave up consecutive singles for Graver Torres and Riley Green before walking to Truckelson to load the fifth bass. The Tigers led 2-1 with Manuel Margot’s sacrifice fly.
Tolkelson went home in the seventh to cut the Tigers’ deficit to 4-3. They once again ran the eighth run of Kelly Carpenter’s sacrifice from Tanner Scott.
Tommy Edman, who hit the first home run of the 2025 MLB season in Game 2 of the Tokyo Series, opened the Dodgers’ home run account by hitting the first long ball of the Los Angeles season in the bottom of two innings.
