Washington Attorney General Nick Brown is suing the state county sheriff’s office for “illegally working with federal officials and the Trump administration to enforce immigration laws.
Brown’s lawsuit, filed in Spokane County Superior Court, alleges that the Adams County Sheriff’s Office is detaining illegal immigrants based on the status of the immigrants, helping federal agents question those in custody and share personal sensitive information from Washington residents with federal officials.
The lawsuit sues a 2019 law prohibiting law enforcement agencies in the state from providing assistance in immigration enforcement. Brown is asking the court to force the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, led by Sheriff Dale Wagner, to comply with Keep Washington’s labor laws.
“Washington has the right and responsibility to decide for itself how to use its own resources to keep its residents safe and the economy strong,” the lawsuit says. “The state can’t stand it when elected officials publicly boast about breaking state laws and putting their communities at risk.”

In a statement released by Brown’s office on Monday, the office said almost all sheriff’s departments in the state are complying with the Keep Washington Working Act, except for a highly selected few.
“The Adams County Sheriff’s Office is illegally working with federal immigration officials and supports the Trump administration’s efforts to hire local officials for federal immigration labor,” the office said. “The lawsuit is to enforce Washington’s maintenance law, based on the simple premise that it is not the job of Washington’s state law enforcement, county sheriff, or local police department to enforce federal immigration laws.”

Brown in a statement claimed that “Adams County was engaged in a sincere settlement negotiation with our office at the end of last year,” but “the county and its sheriff’s office suddenly stiffened, cutting settlement consultations and working with an organisation founded by the most malicious Ant-Trump aid.”

In a February 26 statement released by First Legal, the law firm said it is taking action to protect Adams County, Washington, against illegal and abusive efforts to enforce Washington officials to enforce illegal and dangerous sanctuary laws and policies, and to force Adams County to violate federal immigration laws.”

“Federal law is clear. It is a crime to hide, port or protect illegal aliens, and it is a crime to prevent federal officials from exempting their duties. It also violates federal law to prevent local officials from communicating with DHS about the situation of individual immigration.”
“The immigration laws in our country reflect the will of the Democrats and it’s ridiculous that Washington is working to promote and destroy our country’s invasion,” he continued. “It’s even more dishonorable for Washington to target one of its own counties as Washington has the courage to follow the law and has worked with the ice to keep our country safe.”
